Woodcut Engraving Matrices (2023-2024)
From October 2023 to February 2024, I worked on engraving wood matrices for an embossed book, followed by the creation of prints for the Blind Project between March and May 2024. Both projects were developed at the Athens School of Fine Arts in Greece.
These woodcut matrices are not simply tools for printmaking. They are acts of creation in themselves; they are artworks in their own right. Each carved surface captures a moment. They represent a significant part of my artistic journey and serve as essential elements in the process of producing images. More than that, they carry the imprint of my personal history and involvement, the moments of my life when I was fully immersed in artistic creation. In this way, the matrices become a visual diary, merging different artistic and cultural influences, particularly the dialogue between Greek traditions and my own identity as a Thai woman. These experiences are interpreted through my personal perspective, shaped by my sense of Thainess and how it shifts in different cultural contexts.
Originally developed as part of a project creating embossed prints for the visually impaired, these engraved wooden matrices now appear in this installation as both artifacts and evidence. They are documents of past actions and expressions, carrying tactile memories from then to now. I want the audience to experience them not only as objects but as living memories, to feel the passage of time from the past into the present moment.
